It’s fairly commonly accepted that a high protein diet is good for muscle repair and muscle growth. Furthermore, consuming protein shortly after a workout is going to have the biggest benefit in terms of muscle growth. We also know that not all proteins are equal and that egg whites are one of the most effective protein sources we can consume as well as being relatively easy to digest – it’s just a shame that they are so inconvenient for most of us to eat on a daily basis.
That’s where Blonyx Egg White Protein Powder comes in.
The team at Blonyx reached out to us and asked us to test their egg white protein supplement as they were bringing it to the UK market. We duly obliged and after receiving our samples we got about to testing it out.
We were looking for results, a great taste, fair price and a drinkable consistency – you can find out what we thought, right here in our full Blonyx Egg White protein powder review.
Blonyx Egg White Nutritional Information
Egg whites are widely considered one of the best fuels when it comes to building muscle. They contain hardly any fat when compared to full eggs and they are packed full of protein. Egg whites have one of the lowest caloric profiles when it comes to consuming protein. That being said, you also lose a lot of the nutrients found in whole eggs and the whites are made up of plenty of water – this means you need to consume a lot of them to get a good 20g serving of protein – around 5 large egg whites in total!
Not only can it be expensive to consume egg whites on this scale but it’s also pretty wasteful and incredibly inconvenient when you are out and about. If you hit the gym early in the morning and want to head straight off to work, it’s hardly likely you are going to whip out 5 egg whites while on your commute.
Blonyx aren’t the first company to make egg white protein supplements but they are one of the most respected. They have one of the most natural ingredient profiles of the supplements we have tested and their egg white protein comes in a tasty sounding chocolate milk flavour.
Each serving (37g) gives 20g of protein and just 0.5g of fat. You also get 14g of carbohydrates which are very welcome after a good session in the gym. This macro make-up of 20g protein, 14g carbs and 0.5g of fat means you can enjoy some healthy fats in your other foods through the day and adds just 130 calories to your daily intake – quite incredible numbers really. It even has 4g of BCAA’s per scoop!
Each serving does contain 11g of organic cane sugar, which Blonyx are very upfront about. The reality is that this amount of sugar is quite natural and is needed as part of a balanced diet but you should be aware of it in case you like to go high on sugar elsewhere in your diet. There is also some added salt (220mg per serving) to get the overall flavour right but all in all we’d say the nutritional value and balance of this protein supplement is pretty good – so long as you are happy with the 11g of sugar – at least there are no artificial sweeteners and everything is completely natural.
Blonyx Egg White Taste Test
The Blonyx Egg White powder is fully endorsed by all the appropriate bodies so you know there are no banned substances involved. Informed Choice and NSF Sport have both quality assured the product and it is fully GMP certified.
So, with the formal stuff out of the way, we got on with taste testing the egg white protein powder. 1 scoop is to be mixed with 250ml of water and this provides a fairly shake like consistency that is perhaps a little thinner than some of the whey protein powders you might be used to. We really would say the consistency is more of a milk like consistency rather than a shake and that is what Blonyx are aiming for it seems.
The chocolate flavour is clearly there (it does contain cocoa) although it is not overbearing. It is not overly sweet and has a good balance to it in terms of overall flavour. Those who have a sweet tooth or crave chocolate are probably not going to find this what you might call an enjoyable drink – but it is certainly not unpleasant and the consistency is spot on. We used a standard protein shaker to mix ours and found no lumps at all.
So you might be thinking, why not just go for a whey protein? And that would be a pretty good question.
One of the main reasons to opt for egg white protein over whey protein is that it has a slightly higher level of digestability. In fact, those who often feel bloated after consuming whey protein will likely not experience the same thing with Blonyx Egg White protein. But more importantly, the protein efficiency ratio (PER) of egg white protein is considerably higher than Wheat, Casein, Whey and Soy Protein. In other words, egg white protein has more protein that is used for muscle growth than any other source.
Overall, we enjoyed the Blonyx Egg White protein mix and although it was not the best tasting chocolate protein supplement we have tasted, it had one of the best consistencies and was not unpleasant in any way.
Blonyx Egg White protein powder gets a big thumbs up from us. If you are looking for a high quality protein source that is extremely convenient and mixes well with water then this is an excellent option. Kiss goodbye to bloating or digestion issues that you might experience with whey and say hello to Blonyx Egg Whites.
