If you want to lose weight, there is only one thing you really need to do – maintain a calorie deficit.
This is an oversimplification, but at its heart it is true. Your body will only lose weight when it doesn’t have enough energy coming in to meet its needs. When this happens, it will reach for other sources of energy, namely your body fat reserves.
In general, a daily deficit of around 500 calories will lead to a weekly weight loss of around 1 lb, or 0.5 kg.
But it can be hard to keep up a deficit. You will feel hungry. Your metabolism may slow down slightly to compensate. You may feel a little lethargic, with brain fog, low energy, low mood and irritability kicking in.
Luckily, there is a range of supplements designed to counter these effects and to help you deal with hunger – that’s where appetite suppressants come in – and today we will be looking at the best appetite suppressants available on the UK market.

Our Top Rated Appetite Suppressant
Our Top Appetite Suppressants
With so many appetite suppressants available, it can be hard to know which to choose. We have whittled it down to 9 of the best appetite suppressants we have tested.
All of these are great options and are suitable for both men and women.
PhenQ PM is a brand new supplement from the makers of PhenQ (which just so happens to be second on our list). Where PhenQ excels, PhenQ PM does the same but goes one further – and when it comes to appetite suppression there is simply no better formula than this.
As the name suggests, PhenQ PM works during the evening – and more specifically, through the night whilst you sleep.
This may seem like an odd way to do things, but for many people on a calorie restricted diet, it is actually the night time when you feel the most hungry. Sleep is also key to weight regulation and body composition and PhenQ PM is packed full of natural ingredients that will see you have the optimum amount of deep sleep each night to help your body repair but also burn through fat levels.
Users have reported that cravings and appetite have been reduced in as little as 2 weeks and in our testing we found that the 2-3 week mark was the sweet spot to start seeing the impact of this appetite suppressing supplement. PhenQ recommend you take it for 2-3 months minimum to see best results and with their bundle deals this is pretty cost effective for a premium supplement such as this.
The ingredients are absolutely top tier and start with a really healthy level of vitamin C and vitamin B complex with B1, B5, and B6 included – with the latter in particular being known for reducing sugar cravings.
In terms of pure appetite suppression you get 150mg of 5-HTP which helps produce serotonin and reduce cravings. You also get 120mcg of the mineral chromium which helps to regulate blood sugar levels which should help prevent snacking.
In addition to its appetite suppression properties, PhenQ PM has a range of ingredients that will boost metabolism and in turn increase your natural rate of fat burning. L-Arginine, L-Lysine HCL, Biotin and Choline are all ideal inclusions for this purpose.
You simply take 4 capsules each night 30 minutes to 1 hour before going to sleep and that’s it. Of course, you will need to be a calorie deficit to see best results, but just the sleep benefits alone will help no end. The inclusion of 200mg of L-Theanine means your body and mind is primed for high quality rest and sleep – which in turn leads to optimal fat burning and a healthier version of yourself.
PhenQ PM Pros:
- Impressive night time formula
- Improves sleep quality
- Top tier natural ingredients
- Cost effective with bundle deals
- No soy, gluten, dairy products
- Brings impressive results
- Caffeine free
PhenQ PM Cons:
- Timing of taking capsules is important
PhenQ is amongst the best that the modern supplement industry has to offer. Made by Wolfson Berg, one of the world’s foremost supplement manufacturers, it is a byword for excellence and quality.
PhenQ is more of a thermogenic supplement than an appetite suppressant – though it will undoubtedly help to keep you feeling fuller for longer. This one-two is pretty standard in this list – most of the supplements below will have some form of fat burning and appetite suppressing effect.
Thermogenesis is simply the creation of heat as energy in the body. It is in short how we measure caloric burn. The greater the rate of thermogenesis, the more calories we use. Thus, in boosting thermogenesis, as supplements like PhenQ do, they boost the amount of calories we get through even at rest.
You can get through up to an extra hundred or so calories daily with a good thermogenic supplement. This isn’t enough to overcome a bad diet, but in turning that 500-calorie deficit into essentially a 600-calorie one, you are making your weight loss far more efficient.
PhenQ uses some fantastic, top of the line ingredients to achieve these results. All told, they can boost thermogenesis, keep your appetite down, and even inhibit new fat cell creation.
The ingredients that go towards this include capsicum extract, Lacy’s Reset, piperine extract, and caffeine anhydrous, niacin, chromium picolinate, calcium carbonate, nopal, l-carnitine fumarate.
The former are particularly powerful. Caffeine will give you a good energy boost, which will be sorely needed during a calorie deficit. It will also combine well with capsicum to improve your body’s thermogenic capabilities. The rest will all come into play in one way or another, keeping you feeling fuller even as your body churns through hundreds more calories per week than it otherwise would.
- Everything is natural and suitable for vegans
- There are no reported side effects
- Well backed by high quality research
- Fantastic for boosting thermogenesis
- Inhibits new fat cell creation
- Boost energy levels
- Reduces cravings and overall appetite
- High caffeine content may not be ideal for all consumers
Proactol is an appetite suppressant brought to us by Bauer Nutrition – it has a three pronged attack that we found to deliver quite astonishing results.
It not only helps to suppress appetite, it also aims to block fat absorption in the body, put a stop to your cravings and improve your digestion – all of which will have a positive impact on anybody who is looking to lose body fat.
It is the one appetite suppressant we tested that has a completely different approach to the rest. It is one that is well supported clinically, and like the others on the list it still uses completely natural ingredients.
In fact, Proactol makes use of just one key ingredient – Chitosan. However, unlike other forms of Chitosan, Proactol use a non-animal form from Aspergillus niger mycelium.
That being said, it does still contain shellfish so it’s not fully vegetarian friendly.
Chitosan is a fibrous substance. This is important as fibre is what keeps us feeling full – and this is one of the reasons why Proactol XS performs such a good job at suppressing appetite.
However, the benefits go beyond this. With Chitosan being known to help curb cravings and perhaps more importantly to prevent the body from storing fat. The evidence around this is not 100% (as is usually the case) but there is a growing body of evidence to support these claims.
Additionally, it is thought that Chitosan aids digestion and can even help balance your cholesterol levels – so the health benefits are pretty profound.
We tested Proactol XS for one month – and from day 3 we could feel the impact in terms of much diminished feelings of hunger. After two weeks, we had much less bloat and felt pretty energetic considering we were cutting calories.
There are some great bulk buy deals to be had with Bauer and we’d suggest opting for the 5 month supply (buy 3, get 2 free) and maybe going for an initial 3 month stint, followed by a one month gap and then a further 2 month stint. Depending of course on how much fat you aim to shed.
Taking it is easy enough. You simply take one capsule each morning on an empty stomach and that’s it. This is one thing we love about the supplement as it’s easy to put in to your daily routine.
More importantly though, for us – it worked a treat – and meant we were eating less of them.
- All natural ingredients
- No side effects
- Helps beat cravings and keeps you feeling full
- Improves digestion and bloating
- May block fat absorption in the body
- Great bundle deals
- Helps balance cholesterol
- Not vegan friendly
I love PrimeShred – it’s one of the most potent overall weight loss tools you can find. It is designed to optimise your fat burning potential, just like PhenQ, whilst also giving you everything you need to lead an energetic, active lifestyle. In fact, it’s designed most for bodybuilders and physique competitors, though it’s great for anybody with an active lifestyle – I’ve never been a physique athlete and I’ve always benefitted from taking it when I’ve needed to lose a few extra pounds.
This list is full of high-quality supplements made with top-shelf, potent ingredients. Few represent this as well as PrimeShred. Everything is dosed to highly effective levels, and everything is based on the most cutting-edge research for a formula that is fully up to date and effective.
Ingredients include some of the best going for what PrimeShred seeks to do, including such stalwart trusties as green tea, green coffee, caffeine, bioperine, DMAE, L-tyrosine, L-theanine, and cayenne pepper, as well as a decent B vitamin complex.
All told, all taken together, you are looking at a significant boost to your body’s rate of thermogenesis. At the same time, you’re getting a lot of energy to push you through training as well as some powerful antioxidants to help you recover and stay healthy and strong afterwards.
You will also find your appetite remaining steady and controllable, absent any major crashes or spikes.
As with most of the products on this list, everything is completely natural. As with PhenQ, the ingredients are all also completely vegan, so this is a great one for anybody following a plant-based lifestyle.
- Highly dosed, highly effective formula
- Great for improving energy levels
- Suitable for plant-based diets
- Ideal for those living active lifestyles
- Not the cheapest option
- The high caffeine levels may be unsuitable for some
- Can elicit some gastric distress in the early days of usage
Many of the products on this list are somewhat erroneously aimed at one group or another. Just as PrimeShred is great for non-bodybuilders, however, so too are many of the other supplements below good for all comers. Trimtone represents this very ably – it is aimed squarely at women looking to lose weight, though their formula is perfect for anybody needing a bit of a hand with their weight loss journey.
It focuses most of its attention on ramping up thermogenesis, but so do most of the top weight loss supplements. It will also give you a good energy boost. And it will suppress your appetite, so you’ll get the holy trinity of weight loss benefits – lower appetite, more energy for training, and a faster metabolism to burn through extra calories.
Trimtone is the first supplement on this list to use one of my favourite weight loss ingredients, though. It contains plenty of a very helpful, very healthy form of fibre called glucomannan.
This is incredibly important for a few reasons. Firstly, this is where the primary appetite suppressant qualities come from. Fibre is an indigestible form of carbohydrate that expands in your stomach and digestive tract, making you feel far fuller for longer. It also helps to maintain good digestive health and balanced cholesterol levels. Fibre also happens to often be severely lacking on most calorie-controlled diets; as you eat less of everything, with often a greater emphasis on carbs, fibre kind of falls by the wayside.
So too do micronutrients – vitamins and minerals. This can harm your overall health. It can also slow your metabolism. Trimtone includes a fantastic vitamin and mineral complex aimed at overcoming this and boosting your metabolism.
Then there is the energy and thermogenesis, both of which are impressive due to the inclusion of 120mg of caffeine, 100mg of green coffee and 100mg of green tea. It will be like drinking a couple of cups of coffee in one go, giving you plenty of buzz and boosting your metabolism very ably.
- A perfect appetite suppressant
- Healthy glucomannan
- Easy to take, with only one pill needed daily
- Few side effects associated with it
- Lots of energy and improved thermogenesis
- The caffeine content isn’t suitable for all users
- The capsules aren’t plant-based, so are not appropriate for vegetarians or vegans
If you are concerned about finding yourself a fully vegan supplement – which I personally generally am – then Leanbean might be the one for you. Just like PhenQ and PrimeShred, everything included in its formula is plant-based and natural.
It’s also one of the best dietary supplements going, with a really solid formula for supercharging your fat burning potential whilst keeping hunger pangs at bay. It’s all very coherent and well-planned, with every ingredient working in concert with everything else for the best results possible.
It’s lighter on stimulants too. I wouldn’t usually go for something like this – I generally respond very well to stimulants. However, I fully appreciate that many people don’t want a large volume of any given stimulant in their system and there needs to be a corner of the market reflecting that.
Leanbean also makes good use of glucomannan, making it perfect as an appetite suppressant and as a way to maintain decent digestive health no matter your eating plan or how restrictive your diet may be.
As with Trimtone, this will make it easier to keep to a decent calorie deficit without discomfort.
Leanbean also makes good use of both chromium and choline, two lesser-known minerals that are perfect for weight loss.
Chromium is particularly good. It helps to regulate and stablilise your blood sugar levels. This will make it that much easier to maintain a calorie deficit as you do away with any hunger or energy peaks and crashes.
Choline is a great thermogenic compound, allowing for greater metabolic function, enabling for greater calorie burn overall.
Leanbean can be a little unwieldy to use, however. You need to take three capsules every day. These need to be split up over regular intervals to work optimally, where plenty of other supplements are a one-dose thing each day.
Nevertheless, it’s an incredibly potent thermogenic supplement that will be able to suppress your appetite incredibly well. And all of this is completely stimulant free, which will be perfect for many. It’s worth a little inconvenience for such a solid option.
- Uses glucomannan
- It’s one of the best appetite suppressants going
- Evens out blood sugar and energy levels
- Low stimulation
- Everything is natural and vegan
- A little awkward to take it three times per day
- The lack of stimulant won’t be to everybody’s taste
I really do like Leanbean, but for me, a hefty dose of energy is always welcome. This is why I like our next offering so much.
Instant Knockout is brimming with stimulants and energy-giving ingredients, all of them designed to take you through incredibly high-power workouts no matter what your deficit is looking like.
I mentioned above that some weight loss supplements are aimed at certain people. Instant Knockout is one of them.
It’s aimed at fighters, or at least it was developed for and is marketed at them. MMA fighters and professional boxers are their go-to demographic.
There are some good reasons for this. The energy burst you get is terrific. If you’ve got a heavy session at the bag or need a bit of pep before you spar, it will see you right and then some. If you’re looking to slim down ahead of a fight to become more mobile or get into the right weight category, it’s possibly the one for you.
However, I also mentioned above that demography is a bit silly with some of these products. This is true of Instant Knockout.
Though it is great for fighters, there is nothing in it that makes it specific to them. Anybody looking to take part in any kind of high intensity training, or even just run an active lifestyle without getting too depleted, will benefit from it, especially if they’re running a strict calorie deficit.
Instant Knockout does what you would expect. The formula is designed to help your weight loss journey by reducing your appetite and boosting your metabolic rate. This is in large part due to the large amount of stimulant included, largely from a massive 350 milligrams of caffeine (roughly two cups of coffee in one go). This will improve your physical and mental performance whilst eliciting greater rates of thermogenesis.
It doesn’t stop there, of course. Instant Knockout’s formula also includes all-natural green tea extract, cayenne pepper, black pepper extract, as well as vitamins D and B. These should elicit even more thermogenesis, add even more energy, and improve insulin sensitivity whilst leveling out blood sugar.
This last part is important. In improving insulin sensitivity and evening blood sugar levels, it will stop energy crashes and hunger pangs. In this way, your appetite should be far more readily controlled, making your calorie deficit that much more achievable.
Instant Knockout capsules are also suitable for vegans.
Instant Knockout Pros
- Perfect pre-workout supplement
- Plenty of caffeine for extra energy
- Solid thermogenic ingredients
- Levels out insulin and blood sugar to reduce hunger pangs and craving
- All natural, completely vegan ingredients
Instant Knockout Cons
- The caffeine content may be dangerous for some
Next up we have an entry from another of my favourite supplements companies – Swiss Research Labs’ PhenGold, one of the most potent weight loss tools you can find.
As with many of the items on this list, we can see an incredibly well-researched, high-quality list of all-natural ingredients in their formula. However, there’s a bit of a difference, a bit of something extra at work.
Where most weight loss supplements aim at supporting your body through dieting, PhenGold aims in large part to support your brain and mental wellbeing.
This isn’t to say it leaves your body out. Far from it. It has a good formula aimed at optimising your metabolic health through improved thermogenesis and can give you a great deal of energy.
It speeds up fat burn and usage, thus giving you a far more efficient, energetic weight loss journey. It includes a lot of caffeine, green tea extract, and cayenne pepper, with which it achieves all the physical results you would want to see.
But the key is in its inclusion of high-quality nootropic ingredients. Nootropics are so called ‘smart drugs’, all aimed at improving your cognitive processes, including you mental wellbeing, clarity, speed of thought, memory, and so on.
You get 150 mg of the nootropic dimethylaminoethanol with each serving. This should lead to greater clarity, willpower, and brain function, all of which tend to suffer during a calorie deficit. It also includes l-theanine, which is known for its ability to relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety, which are also common during any form of weight loss.
These ingredients won’t suppress your appetite directly. However, they will overcome the mental fatigue inherent to weight loss and will help you to maintain the willpower you need to keep at it.
PhenGold is suitable for vegans.
- Brings a strong thermogenic effect
- Gives plenty of energy
- Includes nootropics for mental clarity, mood, and willpower
- Little direct appetite suppression
- The high caffeine content isn’t suitable for all users
Let’s finish on a great all-rounder that also gifts you something fairly unique.
I’m talking about Zotrim, and I want to begin with where it aligns with every other weight loss supplement on this list. Because it has great thermogenic properties, delivers a lot of energy, can balance your mood, and will aid in satiation.
Most of the former two points – energy and thermogenesis – come from caffeine and guarana seed extract. As we know, caffeine gives us plenty of immediate energy whilst also helping to optimise metabolic function.
It can make you more alert whilst removing a lot of the brain fog often associated with calorie restricted dieting. It can also lead to plenty of dips and crashes, which is where the guarana comes into play.
Guarana works similarly to caffeine, giving you a good, sharp energy boost whilst eliciting a greater degree of thermogenesis. However, it breaks down far more slowly than caffeine, mitigating the jittery crashes you might get when the caffeine wears off. It will basically make that high last for longer.
In addition, guarana is known to improve the rate at which your body breaks down fat.
Then there is what makes Zotrim pretty unique.
For starters, it uses an ingredient called yerba mate leaf extract. This lesser known herb works similarly to both caffeine and guarana, thus reinforcing the boosted energy levels and improved metabolic rate that Zotrim brings to the table.
It is also known as something of a rejuvenator, above and beyond this energy push. It increases energy molecule synthesis, helping to create more molecules like monophosphate, diphosphate, and adenosine triphosphate that we need for energy, athleticism, and endurance.
Yerba mate leaf extract is also an incredibly rich source both of antioxidants and polyphenols. Polyphenols are much needed in this kind of supplement – they have been linked with faster metabolisms, thus aiding with weight loss by a great deal. Antioxidants meanwhile can keep you healthy and well even as you restrict your nutrient intake.
Secondly, Zotrim includes damiana leaf extract, which I love. It’s similar to PhenGold’s use of nootropic ingredients.
Damiana leaf extract is used in various forms of traditional medicine to manage the symptoms of depression, low libido, and menopause. It manages to do this because it plays a crucial role in balancing your hormones, thus allowing pretty much every aspect of your health and wellbeing – physical and mental – to work far more optimally.
You will be happier, healthier, with improved body composition, if your hormone output is better aligned with your health and fitness goals.
- Damiana leaf and yerba mate extract are very clever inclusions
- Has a wider scope for healthcare than simple weight loss
- Plenty of stimulation
- Powerful thermogenic and appetite suppressing properties
- The high caffeine content isn’t suitable for everyone
There are some fantastic options in this list. There is something for everyone, near enough.
For example, if you want a really solid appetite suppressant with proven thermogenic effects, but aren’t keen on flooding your system with too much stimulant, Leanbean is a genuinely superb option. It will give you everything you need to feel fuller for longer, plough through excess calories, and maintain stable blood sugar and energy levels, all without giving you those jitters.
Alternatively, if you like a lot of buzz to get you through intense workouts, something like Instant Knockout can be a very good choice. Though not for the faint hearted, it will boost you through the toughest workouts going no matter how deep your calorie deficit may be, all whilst keeping your appetite down and your brain clear.
If you want the top all-rounder, though – something that will do everything you ask of it very ably, without leaning too far into one aspect or another – then Wolfson Brands have you covered.
Their PhenQ is about the best of the best, giving you quality, usability, value for money, in an appetite suppressing, thermogenic raising supplement perfect for making your weight loss journey far more comfortable, easily achieved, and optimal.
Our Top Rated Appetite Suppressant
Using An Appetite Suppressant For Best Results
As above, the best way to lose weight is to maintain a calorie deficit. Under eat, in short, so that your body uses its fat reserves to make up the difference. This is where appetite suppressants really come into their own.
They will not make you lose weight by themselves. Nothing will. They will, however, make it far easier and more pleasant to maintain a calorie deficit as you seek to lose weight.
A calorie deficit can come from two places.
Firstly, and most importantly, you can eat less. Use your basal metabolic rate (BMR) to figure out how much you should be eating; multiply this upwards to suit your activity levels (easy to do with any online BMR calculator); deduct a few hundred from the number you get and eat this amount every day.
Secondly, given you need to multiply it by your activity levels, you can see that physical activity burns more calories. So you could try doing more exercise. This won’t usually work by itself – it’s hard to out train a bad diet. However, coupled with eating less, your deficit should come about quite quickly.
Try eating 300 calories less per day and doing 200 calories’ worth of added exercise to make up your 500 calorie deficit.
Then simply use one of the appetite suppressants from our list below. Doing so will make it easier to eat less, will make your results come more efficiently, and will give you the added energy you need to get that physical activity in.
